Create silence!

The present state of the world, the whole of life is diseased.  If I were a doctor and were asked for my advice, I would reply: "Create silence!  Bring men to silence.  The Word of God cannot be heard in the noisy world of today.  Create silence."

As the Father has loved me…

"As the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you.”

The Father allowed Jesus to be killed…and not just killed but killed in the most slow and painful way imaginable…and to be flogged and tortured for hours before that.

The Father loved his son, Jesus, enough to allow this so that Jesus might ‘live’ into the fullness of his calling.  So that he might be the Savior he was born to be.

What does this verse say about Jesus’ love for me?  What does it say about my prayers for Jesus to help me with every little ache and pain, every disappointment and inconvenience?

Does Jesus love me enough to not answer my prayer, “Father, take this cup from me.”

Does Jesus love me enough to help me truly pray, “Nevertheless, not my will but your will be done.”

Prayer of Abandonment by Charles de Foucald
I abandon myself into your hands; do with me what you will.
Whatever you may do, I thank you:
I am ready for all, I accept all.
Let only your will be done in me, and in all your creatures.
I wish no more than this, O Lord.

Into your hands I commend my soul;
I offer it to you
with all the love of my heart,
for I love you, Lord,
and so need to give myself,
to surrender myself into your hands,
without reserve,
and with boundless confidence,
for you are my Father.

A Living Reminder

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
     -Galatians 2:19-20

" order to be a living reminder of the Lord, we must walk in his presence as Abraham did.  To walk in the presence of the Lord means to move forward in life in such a way that all our desires, thoughts, and actions are constantly guided by him.  When we walk in the Lord's presence, everything we see, hear, touch,or taste reminds us of him.  This is what is meant by a prayerful life.  It is not a life in which we say many prayers, but a life in which nothing, absolutely nothing, is done, said, or understood independently of him who is the origin and purpose of our existence."

A Still Center

Many persons, ordained or not, live in a fairly constant state of noise, with their unresolved past and the uncertain present breaking in on them.  They lack a still center and it is only from such a quiet point that we can listen attentively.

Ask Me Not

“Ask me not where I live or what I like to eat…ask me what I think I am living for, in detail, and ask me what I think is keeping me from living fully for the thing I want to live for.”
-Thomas Merton as quoted by Ruth Haley Barton in Life Together in Christ

This 50 year old line from Merton gives us a much needed corrective on our current glut of social media posts and photos of where I’ve been, what I’ve eaten, and who I’ve seen.

I’ve been accused of being too quiet, too standoffish.  However, it’s not that I don’t want to talk to you.  It’s that I want to talk about things that matter.  What is the state of your soul?  Tell me about your soul adventures!

“I disapprove of the usual practice of talking ‘small talk’…I hunger for others to tell me their soul adventures.”
-Frank Laubach in Letters by a Modern Mystic
