Many pains come to the wicked,
but the one who trust in the Lord
will have faithful love surrounding him.
— Psalm 32:10
I’m sure this is not what the psalmist had in mind when he penned these ancient words but this morning the Spirit showed me how both these phrases describe me. I know and confess that I’m wicked — selfish, self-centered, judgmental. I know that these things cause me and others pain.
I also know, beyond doubt, that I’m surrounded by God’s unfailing love, that he has chosen me and adopted me as his beloved child. That, as his beloved child, he can and will use my pains to help me grow in his love. That, as I grow in his love through my pains, I will be better prepared to help others see God’s love in their pain.
