Numbering our days

Teach us to number our days carefully…
     —Psalm 90:12

This morning, as we open the gift of another new year, the Spirit is speaking to me about numbering my days. More specifically about making the ones I have left count for eternity. I’ll be 60 in a few months and entering what is probably the last quarter of my life, the winter of my sojourn here on earth.

If the Lord wills, I’ll have another 10 years or so of fairly active service, although it will get increasingly more difficult as the years slip by. I’ve already seen this in the last few years. I can still go and do most of what I used to do but I need more downtime and a lot longer to recover. And after those years, if the Lord wills, maybe another 10 to 15 years of much slower service to God and my fellow humans.

This seems like a long time but as I look back over the past 15 years of ministry I know it is not. And the Lord knows it too. I believe that’s why He gave us verses like Psalm 90:12 - so that we may number our days carefully.
