The Blue Umbrella

Road trip today.  Coming back home after some meetings in Texas.  I felt like I needed to get out of the truck and stretch my legs so I stopped by Lincoln Parish Park for a little run on those really sweet trails.  About a mile into the run it started raining but it was a warm day and the rain felt good.  A poem I read last week crossed my mind-

Today I saw a woman
Step out into the blessed rain
fold her blue umbrella
and lift her lovely face.
soft so softly
she closed her eyes
and smiled
fresh water slipping
over and around
her dry and grateful lids
running down her cheeks
like unchecked tears.

after a moment or two
she walked on
without putting up her umbrella.

I felt like I’d witnessed
perhaps the finest prayer
ever prayed.

I kept on running letting the rain and the Spirit wash over me.  I felt God’s Presence in the rain and in His creation all around me.  He was answering my prayer for the grace to let myself be enfolded by the Spirit.
