They Do Not Know

They do not know or understand;
they wander in darkness.
     - Psalm 82:5

I’m one week back from a visit to a restricted access country where my friend and I were arrested for giving out the Gospel.  As I read these words of the psalmist this morning my heart is once again broken and burdened for the cops who busted us.  They watched the entire Jesus Film in their language while we were there with them at the police station.  They have now heard God’s message of love for them.  My prayer during the arrest and since has been for God’s Word to burn in their hearts and for the Holy Spirit to bring them to salvation, for them to know this wonderful, ineffable love and peace that I have in Christ.

Become Prayer

"If a few men become prayer - prayer that is 'pure' and to all appearances quite useless - they transform the universe by the sole fact of their presence, by their very existence."

Love Dogs

One night a man was crying Allah.  Allah.
His lips grew sweet with the praising,
until a cynic said, So, I have heard you calling out,
but have you ever gotten any response?

The man had no answer for that.
He quit praying and fell into a confused sleep
where he dreamed he saw Khidr, the guide of soul,
in a thick green foliage.

Why did you stop praising?  Because
I've never heard anything back.

This longing you express
is the return message.
The grief you cry out from
draws you toward union.
Your pure sadness that wants help
is the secret cup.

Listen to the moan of the dog for its master.
That whining is the connection.

There are love dogs no ones knows the name of.
Give your life to be one of them.

Living Stones

Coming to Him, a living stone—rejected by men but chosen and valuable to God— you yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
                -1 Peter 2:4-5

Christ is the living stone, the cornerstone of our faith and our salvation.  And we, you and I, are living stones in this church that God is building.  ‘Chips off the old Block’, if you will.  Through our connection with Christ, our dependence on the Cornerstone, we are being built into a spiritual house.  Our first spiritual sacrifice is worship of God for his holiness, his mercy and the faith he has given us to believe in him.  Our very faith is a gift from God and we should never stop thanking him for this gift.

Our next spiritual sacrifice is our worship of God through our service to our neighbor.  God has chosen us Believers to be his hands and feet in the world today.  As ‘chips off the old block’ we are to follow Christ’s example of love, service and sacrifice.  We are to give our very lives in spiritual sacrifice so that others may know God and the love he has for them.  The world calls us to live by the Golden Rule, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”  But Christ calls us to a higher standard, “Love others as I have loved you.”  This is our spiritual sacrifice.

Blind Desire

For I tell you this: one loving, blind desire for God alone is more valuable in itself, more pleasing to God and to the saints, more beneficial to your growth, and more helpful to your friends, both living and dead, than anything else you could do.

Come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.
For He is our God,
and we are the people of His pasture,
the sheep under His care.
                Psalm 95:6-7

Our first calling is the call to worship.  Worship of our Lord, our God, our Maker.  Our worship must precede everything – even our mission and our ministry.  For through worship will flow our ministry and our mission to the nations.
